March 15, 2019 – Working Commercial Fire (Days Inn Hotel)

March 15, 2019 – Just before 16:00hrs the Schuylkill Haven Fire Department (Fire District 63) was dispatched to 1476 Route 61 (the abandoned Day’s Inn Hotel) for a reported structure fire. Deputy 63 became en-route and immediately advised of a working fire.

Arriving units were met with heavy smoke and fire conditions throughout the building with fire rapidly running the roof-line.  Engine 63-17 arrived and dropped 1000 ft of 5-inch to feed Engine 63-12 & Tower 63-25. Crews immediately set up master streams and blitz lines. Due to the amount of fire, command requested  Tower 52-22 (Minersville) and Ladder 58-25 (Pine Grove) for additional aerial operations.

Squad 63-69 and Tanker 63-38 arrived and set up an attack line on the A/B corner utilizing a blitz line. Wagon 63-16 arrived next and reversed laid 1700ft of 5-inch down to the river area (behind Giant) to draft as an additional water supply with Cressona’s Engine 41-10. Crews worked for a few hours to bring the fire under control and with most units clearing before dusk. Tanker 63-38 along with Engine 63-12 remained on scene for lighting, as the fire marshal processed the scene. Pottsville RIT also responded to the scene.
